2024 –Rio de Janeiro São Paulo

U20 in 2024

The seventh Urban 20 cycle is jointly hosted by two Co-Chairs, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The cycle will comprise two Summits, the first one hosted by São Paulo on June 17 and 18 and the second one hosted by Rio de Janeiro on November 16 and 17. The cycle will include  engagement at G20 meetings hosted by the Brazilian government, including the G20 Sherpa meeting in July and the G20 Heads of State Summit in November, to ensure strong local and regional government presence and key messages being passed on to national counterparts. Co-Chairs will lead a particularly collaborative initiative which includes  U20 participating cities working together with invited observer cities, partners and other G20 engagement groups, who will be invited to contribute to U20 meetings and by proposing side-events or white papers to inform city discussions.

The main outcome of the cycle is the U20 Communiqué, which will be submitted for endorsement to U20 Mayors and subsequently handed to the G20 Presidency in November 2024.

Based on the priorities and objectives established by the Brazilian Federal Government for the G20 Presidency and building on the legacy of the previous U20 Communiqués, the 2024 U20 cycle will focus on the global fight against hunger and poverty, tackling climate change and the reform of multilateral institutions, highlighting the perspective of local governments and the diversity of urban realities among G20 members.

The 2024 Urban 20 cycle began with an online Sherpa meeting on March 6th to present the governance and main priorities of the U20 2024 cycle and to commence the collective building of the 2024 U20 Communiqué. This meeting kicked-off the cycle with messages from the Co-Chair Mayors ofRio de Janeiro and São Paulo, but also from representatives of the G20 Brazilian Presidency with the Head of the International Office of the Ministry of Cities, as well as from the Co-Conveners with the Executive Director of C40 and the Secretary General of UCLG.
